KSSR Curriculum Guide: What Teachers & Parents Need to Know
EduSheet.my
The Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah — known as KSSR — is the foundation of primary school education in Malaysia. Since the revised edition (KSSR Semakan) was introduced, the curriculum has become more structured and focused on core skill mastery. Yet many parents, and even some teachers, are still unclear about exactly what KSSR covers.
This guide gives you a clear, practical overview of KSSR Semakan — what's taught, how students are assessed, and how tools like EduSheet can help you ensure your teaching materials always align with the syllabus.
What Is KSSR?
KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah, or Standard Curriculum for Primary Schools) was introduced in 2011 to replace the older KBSR curriculum. In 2017, the Ministry of Education implemented KSSR Semakan (the revised edition) to strengthen certain aspects based on research findings and teacher feedback.
KSSR Semakan covers Year 1 through Year 6 and uses a standards-based approach — each subject has a Curriculum Standard (what is taught) and a Learning Standard (what students should be able to do).
Core and Elective Subjects
KSSR Semakan organises subjects into several categories:
- Core Module — Bahasa Malaysia, English Language, Mathematics, Science, History
- Thematic Module — World of Science and Technology, World of Arts, World of Music, Physical Education and Health
- Elective Module — Chinese Language, Tamil Language, Arabic Language, Islamic Education, Moral Education
The curriculum centres on mastery of the 4M skills — reading, writing, arithmetic, and reasoning — especially in the early years of schooling.
Assessment Approach: School-Based Assessment
One of the most significant changes from the old KBSR is the introduction of Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah (PBS — School-Based Assessment). Rather than relying solely on public examinations, PBS assesses students continuously throughout the year through:
- Classroom Assessment (PBD) — daily observation and assessment by the teacher
- School Assessment (PS) — tests and assignments set by the school
- Centralised Assessment (PP) — national examinations (the UPSR has been abolished; there are now no public examinations at primary level)
This means teachers need a steady supply of assessment materials — not just for year-end exams, but for continuous assessment throughout the semester.
KSSR emphasises skill mastery, not memorisation. Students who genuinely understand a concept can answer questions in any format — which is why variety in worksheet activity types matters so much.
How KSSR Differs from the Old Curriculum
If you studied under KBSR (before 2011), there are a few notable differences worth knowing:
- Less memorisation, more understanding — questions tend to test how students apply knowledge, not just recall facts
- More hands-on activities — particularly in Science and Mathematics
- More holistic assessment — social skills, creativity, and leadership are also evaluated
- No UPSR — examination pressure at primary level has been significantly reduced
How EduSheet Aligns with KSSR
EduSheet was built with KSSR in mind. When you specify a year group and topic, our AI generates questions that reflect the various skill levels described in the DSKP (Dokumen Standard Kurikulum dan Pentaksiran) — from foundational questions through to application and analysis.
The activity types in EduSheet — fill in the blank, multiple choice, true or false, matching, structured questions — reflect the formats commonly used in KSSR assessments. You can generate materials for any year group (Year 1-6) in either Bahasa Malaysia or English.

Official KSSR Resources
For official information and the latest DSKP documents for each subject and year group, refer to the Curriculum Development Division (BPK) website at bpk.moe.gov.my. The DSKP documents are available for free download and are the primary reference for all teachers.
Understanding KSSR doesn't just help you prepare more relevant materials — it also helps you communicate more effectively with your child's teachers about their progress and what they're working towards.
